With this vibrant and tender exhibition, Chablais-born artist of South Korean origin Tracy Lim shares both her perspective as a human being and as a creator navigating significant cultural changes throughout her journey.

When the Flowers Bloom is a project initiated in 2020 and completed in 2024, which, through the metaphor of the flower, reflects the symbolic condition of the artist as an immigrant. Tracy Lim spent the first third of her life in New York before moving to Seoul and then settling in French-speaking Switzerland in 2012—first in Valais, then in Bex. The flowers she depicts on these canvases of various sizes are Korean cosmos flowers, whose seeds were planted in the United States, Korea, and Switzerland according to her family’s movements. These metaphorical seeds are carried by the wind across continents, eventually blossoming into delicate flowers in fresh, tender, and luminous colors. Tracy Lim’s works also convey a certain nostalgia for her country of origin. For her, the act of creation is a way to preserve personal and generational life stories. For the canvases presented in this exhibition, the artist employed a traditional Korean technique on Hanji rice paper.

The entire creation process spans several months, including preparing the background with natural glue and organic paint, drawing the flower outlines in ink, and finally painting the flowers in multiple layers.

Since moving to Switzerland, Tracy Lim has been experimenting with her art through the study of forms, colors, and movements drawn from everyday life. Her works, created with diverse techniques and materials, are inspired by the passage of time, the observation of flowers in full bloom, and the complexities of visual storytelling.

Thus, the poetic and radiant canvases of the When the Flowers Bloom series gently invite us to reflect on our own human condition.
